MacVicar lived most of his life in the village of Southend. After attending the University of Glasgow he went on to work for the Campbeltown Courier. He is the author of The Screaming Gull and The Ten Green Brothers.

The Crooked Finger has everything a fan of gothics can ask for - a beautiful and intelligent lead, a mysterious and handsome challenger, an isolated setting, a cryptogram leading to a hidden treasure, and more than a bit of danger and romance. Angus McVicar's novel is as appealing today, as when it was first published many decades ago.Eileen's father left her a legacy, a map and a cryptogram purporting to lead to a hidden treasure. The documents are stolen by a mysterious man with a crooked finger - the sign of her grandfather's enemy. Fortunately she made a copy, and it leads her to a small island off Scotland where two mysteries await - the solution to the cryptogram and the identity of the man with the crooked finger.
I liked this novel immensely, and particularly enjoyed McVicar's ideas about the importance of both people working towards making a lasting and loving marriage. Falling in love is easy, creating a strong relationship takes effort, patience, and the willingness to sacrifice personal pride. Speaking from personal experience, much of the advice is good.
The Crooked Finger is a sweet romantic adventure with a touch of mystery and danger. It is the perfect antidote for a jaded palate.
